What brought you to Plant the Seed?

Plant the Seed was this crazy little idea I had while at home with my firstborn. I knew he would have some relationship with growing his own food, because I had had that, having grown up on a farm in rural Tennessee. It felt like a basic injustice that some children wouldn’t have that important relationship, so I began to investigate what garden-based learning could look like in order to help young people have a connection with their food.

If you could have any superpower what would it be, and why?

I would love to have the super power to heal. I feel food and positive relationships can do that, and I feel our world is in such need of it these days.

What is your favorite band/genre of music?

I’m definitely in the Americana, singer/songwriter vein. I love the Head and the Heart, Mumford & Sons, Avett Brothers and Highwomen among others. I am drawn to music for its lyrics, and I know all of the words to so many songs!

What is one goal you want to complete in the next 10 years?

I would really love to create an endowment for Plant the Seed that ensures its sustainability and continued growth. This rinse and repeat cycle of constantly fundraising just to stay in existence is exhausting, and it’s not a model of sustainability we teach about. I’d like to see us do better.
